Fall 2007: Music Recording Workshop

Workshop Topics Week 1: Workshop administrivia & boot camp. Fundamentals of sound, Listening vs. Hearing. Physics of sound: How and what we "hear". Transduction and sound recording survey (analog and digital: compare/contrast & experiment). Media vs message: Critical differences between storage and processing. Week 2: Studio mic techniques. Begin to compare/contrast mics, discuss/explore signal flow and gain staging. Week 3 - Studio session management techniques. Set up and track a band. Compare/contrast mics, and set up a simple band recording session using multiple mic techniques. Week 4 - Overdub Session. Continue tracking/assembling parts. Week 5 - Analog/Outboard and Mixing scenarios and workflows. (discussion of various approaches to mixing) Mixing assignment homework (split group into 3 or 4 sub groups, each approaching themixes with a different workflow). Week 6 - DAW-based mixing scenarios. Initial mix critique and discussion. Week 7 - Pro Tools and hybrid mixing scenarios. Commercial music production concepts. Week 8 - Delivery Program (mastering, syncing, and basic file prep for different applications). Week 9 - Possible extra session (added depending on progress, instructor and venue availability. Class will rely heavily on wiki-based communication between participants and instructors. In addition to each week's workshop (lasting 2-4 hours, depending on topic and work to be done), students will be assigned "home work" to be done on thier own DAW. Therefore some materials are required:
    Computer with internet connection Multi-track DAW (hardware or software) Subscription to Tape Op magazine (Free @ TapeOp.com)
Optional materials:
    Recording quality microphone Isolated recording space a band to record

    Are the dates set in stone? It might make more more sense to do it after the midpoint thing. September might be a busy month for a lot of folks (including myself). I’m in if it could start in october.

    That’s where it’s leaning now it appears… ultimately we don’t roll until we’re full, and while we’re close, we’ve not even discussed times etc! so much organization remains.
