Thanks for the great post Dave. There have been plenty of times where I have wished I could have a record of something that “just happened”, be it Sean McGary waking up in the van and laying out one of his comic/savant soliloquies, or that sound the jar of vinaigrette makes when you shake it just so. In the first case, it would be easy to capture, provided the person talking is speaking loud enough to register above the noise floor. The second would be trickier. As you know, mic selection and placement is an art, and I doubt that really cool, deep field sound of the storm sirens starting up (as heard from Straight St.) is going to be captured well.
Of course, badly recorded sources can be serendipitous. If you’ve spent any time on freesound.org (http://www.freesound.org) you know what this is like. To quote one of the movie guys on the “Radioactiveman Comes To Springfield” episode of The Simpsons, “Cows don’t look like cows on camera”. Sometimes that really grainy recording of a car starting becomes something useful, even if it sounds nothing like the original sound source.
So I can see myself and others pouring over the archives of this “Public Ear” and finding a lot of inspiration from the found material therein.
